My approach to Trichotillomania

I have experience treating trichotillomania and have seen positive clinical outcomes. My approach is individualized and begins with understanding the circumstances, emotional states, internal experiences, and behavioral patterns surrounding hair pulling. Treatment may incorporate behavioral strategies, mindfulness and DBT-based skills, acceptance-based approaches, and clinical hypnosis or other experiential techniques when appropriate. I am particularly interested in helping clients become more aware of automatic patterns, increase their ability to tolerate urges and difficult emotional states, and develop alternative ways of responding. I also recognize that hair pulling can serve different functions for different people, so treatment is tailored to the individual rather than assuming that one technique will work for everyone. When appropriate, we may also explore the emotional or psychological meaning associated with the behavior while maintaining a practical focus on symptom reduction and improved functioning.
