My approach to Trichotillomania

I approach trichotillomania with warmth, curiosity and without judgement. I recognise that hair pulling can be accompanied by shame, frustration or a sense of being unable to control something that may have become an automatic or habitual response. I work collaboratively with you to understand your individual experience of pulling, including when and where it happens, what you notice in your body and emotions beforehand, what the pulling provides for you, and how you feel afterwards. Rather than simply focusing on stopping the behaviour, I’m interested in understanding what function it may serve and what might be happening in the wider context of your life. My relational-integrative approach draws on CBT, humanistic and psychodynamic perspectives. Where appropriate, we can explore patterns, triggers and urges, develop greater awareness of what is happening in the moment, and consider alternative ways of responding. We can also explore experiences that may sit alongside trichotillomania, such as anxiety, stress, emotional regulation, self-criticism and shame. I believe it is important that therapy does not become another place where you feel that you are failing because you have pulled. My aim is to create a space where you can talk openly about your experience, develop a more compassionate understanding of yourself and gradually find greater choice in how you respond. I work with adults and welcome people of all backgrounds and identities, including LGBTQIA+ clients and neurodivergent clients.

About me

I’m a BACP-registered counsellor and psychotherapist offering warm, relational-integrative therapy for adults in London and online across the UK. I work with individuals and relationships, offering a space that is compassionate, curious and non-judgemental. My approach is collaborative and tailored to you rather than based on a single therapeutic model. I draw on humanistic, psychodynamic and CBT approaches. I work with a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, panic, low mood, stress, trauma, relationships, low self-esteem, grief, life transitions, sexuality and gender, LGBTQIA+ issues, neurodivergence and body-focused repetitive behaviours including trichotillomania. I’m particularly interested in the relationship between our thoughts, emotions, bodies, behaviours and relationships. I believe that behaviours which can feel frustrating, embarrassing or difficult to control often make sense when understood in the context of our wider experience. Therapy can provide a space to explore this with curiosity rather than judgement, while developing greater awareness, self-compassion and choice. I welcome people of all backgrounds and identities, including people in diverse and non-traditional relationships. I offer in-person sessions in London alongside online therapy.

Additional Information

I really value the opportunity to work with people experiencing trichotillomania. I know that talking about hair pulling can feel exposing, particularly when there has been shame, secrecy or frustration around it. I want you to feel that you can bring your experience to therapy without judgement. Together, we can become curious about what your trichotillomania means for you, while making space for the person behind the behaviour and for the things that matter to you beyond it. I offer a warm, collaborative and non-judgemental therapeutic space where you can talk openly about experiences that may feel difficult, embarrassing or hard to make sense of. I work with adults from a wide range of backgrounds and welcome LGBTQIA+ clients and neurodivergent clients. I also work with individuals and relationships, including people in diverse and non-traditional relationships. Sessions are available in person in London or online.
