My approach to Trichotillomania

I see you as a person, even though at some point perhaps your view of yourself diminished to a ‘bad habit’ or condition. In therapy, we would begin with why you want to change this habit, what for and what you would want going forward. Our mind loves clarity. So, when we are in two minds, e.g. wanting or missing the hair we once had, but also enjoying the sense of relieve that comes when knotting or pulling it, we stay stuck in the cycle of addiction. Understanding that trichotillomania is driven by anxiety and has OCD, addiction, self-harming and soothing qualities, we work to: 1) increase self-compassion to reduce self-criticism and shame; 2) observe and identify when and how the inner tension turns into the action ie when your hand moves to your head; 3) understand what feelings and emotions you find difficult to tolerate and why; 4) find realistic and effective things, actions, ways to assist you in managing the urges; and 5) continue developing the skills and sense of self. Therapy is a growth process; it comes with discomfort, challenges and rewards. I will support you along the way for a deeper sense of purpose, for a clearer and a bigger picture of what you'd like yourself and your life to be. I believe this difficulty you are living with is about more than your hair.

About me

In my ten-year experience, my approach has been twofold: focussing on what must change first and working through the difficulties to understand when, how and why they started. I help people with addiction, anxiety, compulsions, depression, grief and losses, emotional instability, impulsivity, ruminations, panic attacks, sensory overload, self-worth, identity, body-awareness, traumas, relationships and communication, jealousy, difficulties related to OCD, autism, ADHD and personality disorders.
