My approach to Trichotillomania
I approach trichotillomania as something you can learn to understand and live with, while also working toward meaningful changes in how often, when, and how you pull. For some people, treatment can substantially reduce symptoms. For others, the goal may be developing more choice and flexibility around pulling rather than eliminating it entirely. I’m trained in Habit Reversal Training (HRT) and Comprehensive Behavioral (ComB) treatment, and I also draw from approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). We look at the individual pattern of pulling, including sensory experiences, urges, emotions, attention, environment, and what the behavior may be doing for you. From there, we can experiment with strategies that fit your particular pattern rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all approach. I also consider the ways trichotillomania can intersect with OCD, ADHD, autism, sensory differences, eating disorders, and chronic stress or burnout. My goal is not to make you feel like you have failed if you still pull. It is to help you better understand your BFRB, reduce distress and impairment, increase your sense of choice, and build a life that is bigger than the pulling.
About me
I’m an AuDHD clinician and licensed clinical social worker with lived experience of body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs). I specialize in OCD, BFRBs, eating disorders, and neurodivergence, and work with children, teens, and adults. My approach is collaborative, neuroaffirming, and grounded in the understanding that symptoms and behaviors exist in a larger context. I’m particularly interested in the intersection of BFRBs with OCD, autism, ADHD, sensory differences, and eating disorders. I work with clients to better understand their own patterns and develop approaches that are practical, sustainable, and aligned with the life they actually want to live.
